Biking In Canada - Fernie, BC: Technical and Untapped Mountain Biking
A rising, though still relatively unknown, star in the mountain bike universe, Fernie, BC, is a dream destination for hardcore mountain bikers—even if most of them don’t know about it yet. Well-endowed with the technical backwoods riding British Columbia is famous for, what sets Fernie apart is its magnificent mountain setting and wealth of supersteep singletrack. A historic, hardscrabble coal-mining town that’s seeing an influx of mountain bike and ski bums, Fernie is hemmed in by sharp peaks that spike 4,000-plus feet from the valley floor. The elaborate, intestinal trail networks that carve up these darkly-wooded mountainsides are constantly being added to, so there’s always something new to explore. Though there are a few mellow rides, mainly on dirt roads, Fernie is most alluring to strong veteran riders looking for new challenges.
