Wreck diving At Canada - Halifax, NS, Canada

Reefs start to look pretty much the same, says Gene Peterson of Atlantic Divers, an outfitter that leads dive trips to wreck sites all along the Atlantic seaboard. "But wreck diving is historic—all ships tell a story." From New York’s Long Island to New Jersey’s Cape May, there are some 5,000 documented wrecks to explore, whether you’re into 18th-century galleons or WWII ships.

Nova Scotia’s rocky coastline makes for exciting underwater adventure and some of the world’s best wreck diving. You need advanced certification as well as training in Nitrox to check out the Kolkhosnik, a Russian freighter that went down during WWII near Halifax. Resting 140 feet down in near freezing waters, the Kolkhosnik offers plenty to see, but at that depth, you won’t be able to stay too long. Besides auto parts and barbed wire, you might also swim with seals or spot sunfish and beluga whales. In summer, the waters are still only 40F to 70F, so dry suits are obligatory.
