Costa Rica is a middle-income, developing country with a strong democratic tradition. Tourist facilities are generally adequate. The capital is San Jose. English is widely spoken.
CRIME: Crime is increasing and tourists are frequent victims. While most crimes are non-violent, criminals, including juveniles, have shown a greater tendency in recent years to use violence.
Weather
Climate: High temperatures throughout the year, particularly on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, where rain falls throughout the year but experiences a very wet and humid rainy season between May-Nov. In contrast, the air is crisper and nights cooler in mountain areas.
Clothing: Light clothes with warmer wraps if visiting highland areas. Rainwear essential for coastal areas.
