Climate: Eritrea has 3 climate zones: the central plateau, coastal areas & the western low land. The highest temperatures in the central plateau are in May with 25°C. Temperatures can fall as low as freezing at night during Dec; large temperature differences occur between day & night. There are 2 rainy seasons, the short one is Mar-Apr & the main one from the end of June to the beginning of September with fog from Dec-Feb. In the coastal areas June & Aug have the highest temperatures (25°C-40°C) & even during the colder season temperatures rarely fall below 18°C. The northern coast has a rainy season from Dec-Feb; rainfall is scarce in the southern coastal strip. In the western low land the hottest season is Apr-Jun with temperatures up to 40°C, Dec is the coldest month (around 12°C). There are dramatic temperature differences between day & night. Rainy seasons similar to the central plateau.

Clothing: The most lightweight clothing in lowland areas; medium or lightweight in hill country. Warm clothing is needed at night to cope with the dramatic temperature change.
