Hepatitis E is a virus that occurs primarily in developing countries. Most cases of acute hepatitis E in the U.S. have been reported among travelers returning from high hepatitis E virus-endemic areas.

2. How is hepatitis E transmitted?
Most hepatitis E outbreaks are associated with fecally contaminated drinking water. However, unlike the hepatitis A virus, which is also transmitted by the fecal-oral route, person-to-person transmission of the hepatitis E virus appears to be uncommon. There is currently no vaccine available for hepatitis E.
