Located 300 miles southwest of India, the Republic of Maldives is emerging as a premier surf destination. The region consists of more than 1,100 wave magnet islands that attract surf most of the year. Combine that with warm turquoise water, swaying palm trees and white sand beaches and you have a serious tropical surf trip on your hands.

One of the best ways to sample the region’s succulent waves is to stay at Tari Village, a small surf camp strategically based at Pasta Point—one of the Maldives’ most consistent breaks. The camp maintains exclusive surf rights at the Point and limits the number of surfers in camp to 30, so you’ll never have to worry about hassling for waves. Tari Village also offers free daily boat trips to breaks in the nearby North Male’ Atoll region like Sultans, a barreling right, and Honky’s, one of the longest lefts in the area.
Although the Maldives is decidedly "developing," don’t expect to rough it at Tari Village. The camp boasts two-story air-conditioned bungalows, two bars, a restaurant, scuba facilities and a tennis court—all important if you’re traveling with a nonsurfing companion. Your best bet for surf in the Maldives comes during the southwest monsoon season, which runs from March to November, though June and July are tops.
WATERWAYS SURF ADVENTURES, USA
Since 1994, Sean Murphy has been arranging trips for fellow surfers to wave-laden destinations worldwide. Maldives was one of the first trips he offered and it’s still one of his favorites. The Maldives are a tropical surfer’s paradise of twenty-six atolls and 1,192 islets, strung like a “garland of islands” along 73° east longitude – which puts it exactly halfway around the world from New York City. WaterWays Travel has an exclusive relationship with Atoll Adventures which was founded by Tony Hussein Hinde and his family to manage the Surf Program for Chaya Island Dhonveli Resort (formerly Tari Village & Dhonveli Beach & Spa) which later expanded into yacht based operations in both the Southern/Outer Atolls and North & South Male Atoll. Atoll Adventures know the Maldives better than anyone else, as they discovered most the breaks going back to the beginning. They maintain Chaaya Island Dhonveli Resort, outer atoll yacht charters, inner atoll yacht charters.
