The world’s second largest island, Papua New Guinea has attracted more than its fair share of negative publicity lately, due to violent crime in Port Moresby (legitimately an unsavory place). Beyond town, however, Papua New Guinea is a safe, untouched land of tropical fiords, mazes of mangroves and amazing sea life.

Expeditions explore Papua New Guinea’s Tufi Peninsula and Trobriand Islands. Tufi is a deeply eroded volcano surrounded by stunning fiords and crystal clear snorkeling-friendly waters. Beyond the scenery, one of the most amazing aspects of this trip is the chance to interact with the locals in the islands’ tiny primitive villages. Tourists are rare here and the villagers are genuinely curious and excited as kayakers paddle up. Also, most speak English so you have the unique opportunity to share conversation with the villagers while camping on their beaches. Most outfitters use inflatable kayaks rather than their sleeker, hard-shell brethren.
For two years now, Mountain Travel Sobek has led sea kayak expeditions in Papua New Guinea’s Tufi Peninsula and Trobriand Islands. Expeditions are led by David Nitsch, a veteran sea kayak guide with a laidback approach that makes for a relaxing yet enriching experience. David has been leading kayak expeditions in Alaska and the South Pacific for the last 13 years. He has paddled in Papua New Guinea extensively and remains overwhelmed by the beauty of the land and the diversity of its people, flora, and fauna. With a background in sedimentary geology, David studied marine invertebrates and has a passion for spending time underwater observing fish and modern reef-building organisms. David is a senior guide for Alaska Discovery, the premier wilderness guiding company in Alaska that was acquired by Mountain Travel Sobek in 2000.

They use Czech-made inflatable kayaks for this trip. Each boat is 12½ feet long, and has the versatility to accommodate one paddler and a large amount of gear or two persons and personal gear only. These kayaks, while not fast to paddle, offer an ideal solution to your needs: they are very easy to climb in and out of for snorkeling and swimming, and also easy to transport by small plane or boat. Also use a rudder system; they are very rugged and quite stable. Adventure travel works best with a small group of people. In order to operate these small groups, our trips are priced according to the number of full-price passengers on the trip. Mountain Travel Sobek staff, trip doctors, and other discounted travelers are excluded from the count for this purpose. It is advisable to plan early for holiday trips since they fill up Participant Information Form.
