Health risks

Eritrea is a poor, but developing east African country. Formerly a province of Ethiopia, Eritrea became an independent country on May 24, 1993, following a 30-year struggle that culminated in an overwhelming referendum vote for independence. Tourism facilities are very limited. The capital is Asmara.

Weather

Climate: Eritrea has 3 climate zones: the central plateau, coastal areas & the western low land. The highest temperatures in the central plateau are in May with 25°C. Temperatures can fall as low as freezing at night during Dec; large temperature differences occur between day & night. There are 2 rainy seasons, the short one is Mar-Apr & the main one from the end of June to the beginning of September with fog from Dec-Feb. In the coastal areas June & Aug have the highest temperatures (25°C-40°C) & even during the colder season temperatures rarely fall below 18°C.
