Ask most surfers to name the top ten surf destinations in the world and it’s unlikely that Madagascar will make it into the lineup. Big mistake. The fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar is an untapped playground of offshore islands and reef passes that provide year-round surf and a long, hollow ride. From the US, it can take two days just to get to Madagascar but once on board, you’ll spend at least a week exploring the surf of the outer reefs, river mouths and islands along the west coast from Anakao to Morombe. Most of the best waves break on reefs accessible only by boat, which will escort you right up to the lineup of many an offshore reef pass. During your trip, you’ll likely have the chance to surf a famous unnamed left that’s familiar to most surf-video aficionados. The water is warm so all you’ll need is a pair of surf trunks and a rash guard. And the waves can pack a punch, so bring a couple boards with at least one that can handle big surf. After a week or two of diving into Madagascar’s empty waves and rich culture, it will undoubtedly wind up on your top ten list.
