Kauai is the oldest and most northerly of the Hawaiian Islands. Here you’ll find fewer faux luaus and day-glo souvenir shops. Instead: lush green hills, spectacular waterfalls, crescent-shaped beaches and, of course, surf. Tourism is still big business on Kauai, but you get just enough of it to make life easy while exploring the island’s unspoiled waves. Poipu Beach, on Kauai’s southern side, has great conditions. During the summer you’ll find offshore winds and fun-sized, manageable surf at nearby Waiohai (peeling lefts and rights) and Left Lefts (a speedy left point break). With a rental car, you can explore the island’s other surf spots, which range from soft beginner waves to dredging reef breaks. Besides first-rate surf, Poipu Beach’s crystal-clear water also serves up quality snorkeling and swimming. A good place to stay in Poipu is the Kiahuna Plantation. These nicely outfitted surfside condos include full kitchens—key for avoiding the high-priced menus at nearby tourist restaurants. May to September brings the most surf to Kauai’s South Shore, while October to April sees bigger waves on the island’s North Shore.
