The waves may not always be the biggest or the best, but they’re always rideable—a key factor for the traveling surfer.

San Diego county features an amazing array of surf options—from the wedging reef breaks of La Jolla’s Windansea (Tom Wolfe wrote about the spot in The Pumphouse Gang) to the mellow beach breaks of Tourmaline and Mission Beach. The climate is pleasantly Mediterranean year-round and the region receives its best swells during the winter and fall, though summer can bring good surf to the northern part of the county. The water is never really warm though you can get away with just surf trunks for a few lucky weeks in the summer.
