Kayak Surfing In Zimbabwe, Zambezi River - Whitewater: Class III-IV

Kayak Surfing In Zimbabwe, Zambezi River

The Zambezi flows through six African countries before reaching the Indian Ocean. The river’s famous whitewater section begins just below Victoria Falls and is considered one of the most concentrated series of Class IV and V drops in the world. Just past the falls, the Zambezi rushes through a narrow 400-foot-deep gorge, creating big holes and waves up to 20 feet tall. The safest time to head to the Zambezi is June to mid-February, when the river is flowing at a lower, more runnable level, and some of the class V rapids are down to Class IV.

The Zambezi River, runs it's course from a remote hill in Western Zambia, flows over Victoria Falls on the Upper Zambezi, through the Batoka Gorge into Lake Kariba. Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site, one of the Natural Wonders of the World, Africa's undisputed "Adventure Capital" and the primary hub for safaris into some of Southern Africa's top safari destinations. Victoria Falls holds centre stage for a full range of "adrenaline-filled" options including whitewater rafting, Zambezi riverboarding, Kayaking, Jetboat combinations, Abseiling in the Batoka Gorge, and Bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge. Victoria Falls offers simple access into Botswana's Chobe, Okavango and Kalahari; Zimbabwe's Hwange and Zambezi National Park plus Zambia's Mosi-oa-Tunya and Kafue National Parks.

Mountain Travel Sobek, USA

In 1981, Sobek made the first descent of the Zambezi from the base of Victoria Falls to Lake Kariba. They’ve been guiding trips down the treacherous river ever since. Sobek makes the first decent of the Zambezi River, Zimbabwe. Nate Flint has been leading trips for nine years throughout the western U.S., and sees the Middle Fork at the top of his list for his favorite river. Nate is as solid guide as they come, but his skills go beyond the realm of “on-water” knowledge. His passion for geography and anthropology will provide insight into the cultural and physical characteristics of the Middle Fork. Nate has also worked for MTS in Zimbabwe on the Zambezi River.

A Mountain Travel Sobek representative will meet you at the airport and escort you to the River Club, located on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River about 10 miles upstream from Victoria Falls. Accommodations are in thatched chalets with private bathrooms, overhead fans, and mosquito nets. The main lodge, built in a colonial style, houses the dining and sitting rooms, which overlook the Zambezi River with spectacular views of islands that are frequented by elephants and hippos. Canoeing a peaceful stretch of the Zambezi River, the spectacular "Flight of Angels" over the falls, bungee jumping, and the thrilling whitewater rafting trip on the Zambezi.
